In his second season with the Cowboys, Smith became a full-time starter at cornerback. His numbers went up across the board. He picked off six passes and returned one for a touchdown. He forced three fumbles and recovered one. Tackles went from 31 with previous season to a hefty 90. Smith once again contributed to the Cowboys' Super Bowl Championship following the regular season.
Battling back through a torn achilles tendon, Smith would have a relatively long career with the Dallas Cowboys. In all, Smith played eight seasons for Dallas and put up the following numbers:

- 334 regular season tackles
- 3 Super Bowl Championships
- 1996 2nd team All-Pro
