Pelluer would become the primary backup for Danny White in 1986. White was injured in week nine, and Pelluer filled in as the starting QB for the remainder of the season. He threw for 2,727 yards and eight touchdowns, with 7.2 yards per attempt.
The following season would see Pelluer start four games and put up a 2-2 record. He threw for 642 yards and three TDs in the 1987 season.
In 1988 Pelluer started the majority of the regular season games for the Cowboys. He threw for 3,139 yards and 17 TDs as the Cowboys put up a 3-11 record in his 14 starts that season.
The next season, with Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh in town, Pelluer was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
