If it wasn't for another great football player at the University of Southern Mississippi however, we might be recalling Favre as the most famous football player to ever wear number 10 in the NFL. There was an interesting article recently, about how Brett Favre came to wear the jersey number 4, beginning as a young freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi.
In high school Brett Favre wore the jersey number 10. When he got to the University of Southern Mississippi as a freshman, he asked for the number 10. He was refused that jersey number, as it was off-limits to any future USM football player. The reason was that it once was worn by USM great Reggie Collier. As the first NCAA Division I quarterback to pass and rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season, Collier was known by Favre, and there was no question why number 10 was reserved.
So, Favre got the only available jersey number from the USM equipment manager. That number was 4. And Favre would wear it, not only as a stand-out at the collegiate level, but into the NFL, as a league MVP, Super Bowl Champion and Green Bay Packer retirement.
