The best New York Giant to ever wear the jersey number 1 is also purportedly the first professional athlete to ever have their jersey number retired. Ray Flaherty played for the Giants between the years 1928 and 1935, with a brief break in 1930 when he coached at Gonzaga. For two years prior to becoming a Giant, Flaherty was a member of the New York Football Yankees.
Flaherty was also known as a phenomenal football coach, after ending his playing days with the Giants, leading the Washington Redskins to two NFL Championships.
Did you know.......that Flaherty also played minor league baseball?
