The number one overall draft pick out of Georgetown by Philadelphia in the 1996 NBA entry draft, the guard known as "The Answer" quickly became a fan favorite in Philly. He made an immediate impact on the team, scoring 1,787 points as a rookie en route to being named the 1997 NBA ROY.
Iverson would build on that initial campaign, showing offensive prowess, and leading the NBA in points-per-game scoring four times.
Fielder wore number 28 while with Detroit and Milwaukee. Pitcher Joakim Soria had been wearing number 28 most recently with the Rangers.
This choice of jersey number is unusual in that you don't normally see high numbers like this in baseball, other than the odd number 99. It will certainly let Fielder be unique and stand out from the crowd in Texas.
You can already find a Prince Fielder number 84 jersey on eBay.
During the Cougars' 1976 season, Thompson led the Pac-8 (the predecessor to the Pac-10) in passing touchdowns with 20 and passing yards with 2,762.
Thompson, who wore jersey number 14 at Washington State, is only the second Cougar to have their football number retired.
The Miami Heat are slated to wear these new jerseys on Christmas Day when they take on the Los Angeles Lakers.
In addition to starring at defensive back and "Lobo-back" (a cross between a linebacker and free safety) for the Lobos, Urlacher, who wore number 54 in the NFL, spent time as a return specialist as well as at wide receiver for New Mexico. He was a consensus All-American for New Mexico in 1999, part of a tenure that spanned 1996-1999 as a Lobo.
The retirement of Elway's jersey number at half-time was the first highlight of the night for Stanford. The second, and arguably greater highlight, was the Cardinal victory over the Oregon Ducks.
Although not many Cardinal football players have had the honor of their jersey number being retired, an exclusive club to say the least, expect that there will be at least one more number retired. Andrew Luck, who led Stanford at QB while wearing jersey number 12, and who moved on to the NFL with the Colts wearing the same jersey number, will most likely receive the same honor as Elway in the future.
The Moscow native first took to the NHL ice during the 1991-92 season, beginning what would become a Hall of Fame career. In 702 regular season games spent with the Canucks, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers, Bure would notch 779 points.
The speedy Russian was one of the best goal scorers of his time, leading the league in that category three times.
Did you know........Bure scored 34 goals in just 65 regular season NHL games as a rookie?
(A nice touch by the Canucks players in warm-ups.)
Foote had a stellar NHL career spanning the seasons of 1991-92 and 2010-11, spent primarily with the Quebec / Colorado organization, stopping over briefly in Ohio to play with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Over 1,154 regular season contests, Foote notched 308 points and 1,534 penalty minutes. He was a key member of the Colorado squads that won the 1995-96 and 2000-01 Stanley Cup Championships.
He became an offensive rebound machine, leading the league in that category for 2004-05, and winding up his career with 2,444 total, good enough for 52nd all-time as of this post.
Jersey number 11 will be raised to the rafters on March 8, 2014 at Quicken Loans Arena.
Jason Kidd is also the best NBA athlete to ever wear the jersey number five.
What's the best jersey number of all time? Is it number seven, worn by Mickey Mantle and John Elway? Or is it number 23 worn by Michael Jordan and LeBron James? How about number four worn by Lou Gehrig and Bobby Orr? Number 33 could also be in consideration, worn by Larry Bird, Tony Dorsett and Kareem. And don't count out number three worn by babe Ruth, Allen Iversen, and Bronko Nagurski. But who would you pick? And what criteria would you use?
