Carmelo Anthony it is. The fans have voted and Anthony is considered the best Syracuse basketball player ever. And it wasn’t very close. Carmelo received 53% of the votes.
Now this is a case where the best Orangeman ever does not necessarily mean the “Best By The Numbers”. With Anthony playing just one season, albeit a great one, for Syracuse, he didn’t have the time to match up with some of the other ‘Cuse greats on the all-time stat lists.
Consider some of the other great basketball Orangemen on the stat boards. Lawrence Moten is currently the all-time leader in points with 2,334 points and a 19.3 ppg average. Anthony sits at number 75 on the list with 778 points, but a 22.2 ppg average. Who knows how many points Anthony would have racked up if he stayed four years?
Is this a case then of the most popular, or best current NBA player to hail from Syracuse being considered the best? Maybe. But, the fans have voted and Anthony is clearly the majority choice.
In Anthony’s season at Syracuse, he averaged a double-double with 22.1 points and 10.0 boards per game. He led the Orangemen to a National Championship in that freshman season, and had a double-double in the Championship game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was subsequently named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.
