NHL Number 96 - Thomas Holmstrom

Now there have been a few superb NHLers to wear the number 96 on the ice.  Pavel Bure and Phil Housley are two superstars who have worn 96.  Thing is, they only wore that number for a brief period of their overall careers.  The best NHL athlete to wear this number, for a significant period of time, is longtime Red Wing, Thomas Holmstrom.

Holmstrom would begin his NHL career with Detroit during the 1996-97 season.  It was that season in which the Red Wings would defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup.  Holmstrom, while wearing number 15, would see one game on-ice during that season's playoff run.

The following season saw him wearing jersey number 96, and proving himself as an offensive asset for the Wings as they would once again win the Stanley Cup, this time with a sweep of the Washington Capitals.   Holmstrom would contribute much more significantly to the Cup this time around, playing in 22 playoff games with 7 goals and 12 assists, to go with a +9 on-ice.

Holmstrom has continued to excel for Detroit, having two of his most productive seasons offensively at the ages of 33 and 34.

In total Holmstrom has four Stanley Cup Championship rings, with 501 career regular season points over 14 NHL campaigns.  He also has an impressive 88 post-season points in 164 games.

Did you know..................................that Holmstrom has won an Olympic Gold Medal with his native Swedish hockey team?

NHL Number 95 - Aleksey Morozov

The number 95 has not been a popular one as far as NHL jerseys are concerned.  Aleksey Morozov wore the number for his entire NHL career however, and was the best to do so.

Morozov was taken in the first round of the 1995 NHL entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The right winger from the USSR would see his first action as a Penguin at the age of 20 during the 1997-98 season.  In 76 rookie campaign games, Morozov would evenly split his goals and assists, with 13 each.

He would remain with the Penguins for his seven year NHL career, maintaining a fairly balanced production between goals and assists.  For his regular season career, Morozov had 84 goals and 135 assists.

Did you know...............that Morozov had particular success against one goalie during his career:  Martin Brodeur?

NHL Number 94 - Ryan Smyth

Ryan Smyth, who has worn the jersey number 94 for the large majority of his NHL career dating back to the 1995-96 NHL season, was drafted sixth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1994 NHL entry draft.  He would actually see ice time in 3 regular season games during the 1994-95 season, but would have his actual rookie season in 1995-96.

That first season was not an omen of his NHL career.  In 48 games, Smyth put up 11 points during his rookie campaign.  The following season, 1996-97, is when Smyth would breakout and show his stuff.  He played in a full 82 regular season games, racking up 39 goals and 22 assists (61 points total).  He would lead the NHL in power play goals that season with 20.

As of this post, Smyth had amassed 754 points in 1,057 regular season NHL games. Of those, 352 were goals, and 402 were assists.

Did you know............that when Ryan Smyth played in his 1,000th game, only 256 players had accomplished that feat previously?

After spending a few more seasons north of the American border, Gilmour would be sent to the recent Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils, during the 1996-97 season.  Gilmour spent the remainder of his NHL career through the 2002-03 seasons, continuing to be a valuable asset for the Devils, Blackhawks, Sabres and Canadiens, finally being traded to Toronto and ending his career there due to injury.
