Best Sports Debates - Best NHL Goalie Ever

If I were writing this post based on my own perception of who the best NHL goalie ever was, it would come down to a choice between two of the greatest: Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy. But, in an effort to bring a bit of objectivity to the discussion, I'll use the same general logic that was used in selecting the best NFL quarterback and best NFL running back of all-time. Let's take a look at the stats.

Top 5 Goalies in:

(Thompson, Larocque, Brodeur and Sawchuk all had four wins here, tying for 5th place)

If a goalie appears on any two or more of the six above lists, then he will be included in the analysis for the greatest goalie ever.  The candidates then are:  Martin Brodeur, Terry Sawchuk, George Hainsworth, Patrick Roy, Curtis Joseph, Dominik Hasek, Jacques Plante, Tiny Thompson and Ed Belfour.

Okay, now that we have our goalies, we'll compare all nine of them by the above categories, and give them points for where they rank.  Here are the goalies ranked from top to bottom in each category by where they stand comparatively, from a statistical record point-of-view:

(Note:  Save stats were note kept during the playing careers of Thompson, Plante, Sawchuk and Hainsworth, so they will all receive the median amount of points in this category.  This category is kept for the purposes of determining the best goalie, because of its importance, even though earlier NHL goalies may not have had their saves tracked.)

If you give a point to each goalie, based on where they fall in the standings from 1 through 9 (accounting for ties and the median points given to the goalies who don't have save or save percentage stats), and then sum those points from each of the six categories, or lists, this is how the best goalies stack up, statistically:

Mcfarlane NHL Martin Brodeur 2003 Stanley Cup Champions1)  Martin Brodeur - 46 points
2)  Jacques Plante - 38 points
3)  Dominik Hasek (tie) - 37 points
3)  Tiny Thompson (tie) - 37 points
5)  Terry Sawchuk (tie) - 36 points
5)  George Hainsworth (tie) - 36 points
7)  Patrick Roy - 32 points
8)  Ed Belfour - 28 points
9)  Curtis Joseph - 21 points

Not exactly where I thought they'd shake out.  I figured Brodeur and Plante would be near the top, but surprised that Roy isn't up near the top with them.  For sake of argument, if we say that saves and save percentage should be removed from the tally, let's look at how they'd rank with just the four other categories:

Steiner New Jersey Devils Martin Brodeur Autographed 8X10 Photo1)  Martin Brodeur - 30 points
2)  Jacques Plante - 24 points
3)  Dominik Hasek (tie) - 23 points
3)  Tiny Thompson (tie) - 23 points
5)  George Hainsworth (tie) - 22 points
5)  Terry Sawchuk (tie) - 22 points
7)  Patrick Roy (tie) - 16 points
7)  Ed Belfour (tie) - 16 points
9)  Curtis Joseph - 9 points

Not much of a difference in the rankings at all, other than Roy and Belfour matching for the 7 slot.

Agree?  Disagree?  Why?

Baron Davis to Change Jersey Number on Cleveland?

Baron Davis Youth Jersey: adidas Blue Replica #5 Golden State Warriors JerseyCleveland's newsnet5.com reports that Cleveland has dealt Mo Williams and Jamario Moon to the LA Clippers for Baron Davis and a 2011 first round pick.  Baron Davis has worn number 5 with the Clippers and Golden State Warriors.  Currently on the Cavaliers, jersey number 5 is worn by Ryan Hollins, their center out of UCLA.

New Orleans Hornets Baron Davis Kids Replica Jersey, Size= 5/6Davis has also worn the number 1 during his NBA career, with the Clippers and Hornets.  That number is also currently being worn by a Cavalier.  1 is currently sported by Daniel Gibson.

If Davis doesn't want to, or can't, convince Hollins or Gibson to switch their jersey number so he can wear either 5 or 1, he may be donning a new jersey number for his time with Cleveland.  If that's the case, which number will it be?

7 for Anthony

It was reported this morning by the New York Daily News, that Carmelo Anthony will be wearing jersey number 7 as he debuts for the New York Knicks tonight.

Anthony had previously worn number 15, but that number has been retired twice by the Knicks, for Earl Monroe and Dick McGuire. So, Carmelo will switch to a new jersey number in New York and Knicks fans will hope it is a lucky one. No doubt that number 7 will be seen on the backs of many Knicks' fan's jerseys in the coming months.

Knicks fans will have to wait and see how numbers one 1 (Stoudemire) and 7 play together, but if the experiment in Miami with James and Wade is any indicator, then watch for some more exciting basketball being played at Madison Square Garden.

NHL Number 88 - Eric Lindros

I still have the Score Hockey card set that featured Eric Lindros as the next great NHL star.  Number 88 may not have had a Mario Lemieux-esque career, but he did have a very strong career with some impressive career stats.  Lindros was drafted by the Nordiques in 1991, but would wind up beginning his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers.  His career would take him from Philly to New York, Toronto and Dallas.

Over 13 NHL seasons, number 88 tallied:
  • 372 goals
  • 493 assists
  • 1.14 points per game (18th all-time)
  • 16.1% shooting percentage (oddly enough, 88th all-time)
  • 1994-95 Hart Memorial and Ted Lindsay Award Winner
  • .49 career goals per game (30th overall)
Did you know.................................Lindros won a gold medal with the Canadian team in the 2002 Winter Olympics?

Number 10 to be Retired by Detroit

According to Yahoo Sports, the Detroit Pistons will be retiring Dennis Rodman's jersey number 10. Rodman was a key member of course, of the Detroit Bad Boys teams which won the NBA championship in 1989 and 1990.

Rodman also had a very successful career with the Chicago Bulls, but many fans will associate Rodman as a rebounding maven with the Pistons, first and foremost.

Jersey Number of the Day - 20 - Ray Allen - 2-10-11

Congrats to Ray Allen on setting the all-time NBA record for most 3 pointers. Although his Celtics didn't outplay the Lakers, Allen was able to set the record according to espn.com and pass Reggie Miller for the most treys in NBA history.

I still remember Ray Allen playing at an All-American level for the UConn Huskies. Amazing to think he now holds such an impressive pro record.

Randy Foye's Jersey to be Retired by 'Nova

Randy Foye, currently playing in the NBA with the Clippers and Blake Griffin, will have his number 2 jersey retired by his alma mater, the Villanova University Wildcats this Saturday. In town, maybe coincidentally, will be the ESPN GameDay crew. Foye's jersey will be retired during the GameDay broadcast, and Villanova will take on the Pitt Panthers at the Pavillion later that night.

During his collegiate career, Foye averaged 13.1 assists per game over four years, and helped Villanova reach the elite eight and sweet 16 during the NCAA tournament.

Foye currently wears number 4 in the NBA.

Curtis Martin will be a Hall of Famer

Congratulations to this years' selections for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They all deserve this recognition.

I will state here that Curtis Martin will unequivocally be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the future. Let's look at his stats.

14,101 career rushing yards (over 11 regular seasons - currently 4th all-time)

4.0 Average Yards per Attempt

90 Career Rushing TDs (Currently 12th all-time)

10 Consecutive Seasons of at least 1,000 Yards Rushing

3,329 Career Receiving Yards

83.9 Career Rushing Yards Per Game (11th all-time)

17,430 All-Purpose Yards (11th all-time)

100 Total Career TDs (Tied for 19th all-time with Franco Harris)

Do those statistics warrant Hall of Fame election? I certainly think so.

Jersey Number of the Day - 18 - Nathan Horton - 2-9-11

Nathan Horton racked up a hefty 5 points (1 goal and 4 assists) in the Bruins 8-6 knockdown, drag-out win over the Canadiens, which some are calling the "game of the year".  Horton has his 4 assists in the first two periods, while tallying his own goal in the third period.

Anytime you have a brawl like the one in Boston on Wednesday night, and the goalies are involved, the game will make headlines.  In addition to Horton's spectacular performance, one of the leading story lines from this game was the battle between goalies Tim Thomas and Carey Price.

Jersey Number of the Day - 42- Kevin Love - 2-8-11

38 consecutive double-doubles.  Sounds like an impressive feat, doesn't it?  Well, it is, and it's just what Kevin Love accomplished yesterday.  Love set the Minnesota record for consecutive double-doubles in a 112-108 victory by his Timberwolves over the Houston Rockets.

The big forward out of UCLA is now averaging 21.4 points per game and 15.4 rebounds per game for the 2010-2011 NBA season.  Think all Love can do is rebound and score from inside?  Think again.  He is 43.9 percent from behind the arc this season, going 72 for 164 so far.

Rodgers is now one of three Green Bay quarterbacks to have won the Super Bowl, along with Bart Starr and Brett Favre.

Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson nine times for 140 yards and a score, while connecting with Greg Jennings for two touchdowns.

NHL Number 87 - Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby Black Reebok NHL Premier Pittsburgh Penguins JerseySidney Crosby, or "Sid the Kid" as he's known is reported to wear the jersey number 87 because of his birth date.  He was born on 8-7-1987.   Whatever the reason, it was smart to pick that number from a marketing perspective.  Think of the unique numbers of some of the other all-time greats:  Gretzky wore 99, Lemieux 66, Lindros 88, Primeau 55, Roenick 97.  All fairly unique numbers for these hockey players at the time they began wearing them in the NHL.

Crosby was taken first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005 NHL draft.  That pick would lead the Penguins down a path of greatness in the years to come.  Without going into too much background on Crosby, let's look at what he's accomplished in just 6 seasons playing in the NHL.

  • 572 regular season points (in 412 regular season games)
  • 2008-09 Stanley Cup Champion
  • 2006-07 NHL points leader (120)
  • 2009-10 NHL goals leader (51)
  • 20007-8 assists per game leader (.91)
  • Current active points per game leader (1.31)
  • 2006-07 Art Ross, Hart Memorial and Ted Lindsay Award winner
  • Youngest NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup
  • Youngest NHL player to score 100 points in a season

Did you know................that in Crosby's rookie NHL season, he actually had more penalty minutes (110), than points scored (102)?

Jersey Number of the Day - 3 - Dwayne Wade - 2-4-11

Dwyane Wade Jersey: adidas 2010 Revolution 30 Black Replica #3 Miami Heat JerseyDwayne Wade decided to be the evening's star for the Heat as they topped the Bobcats. Wade racked up a triple-double in the game, where he scored 22 points with 12 boards and 10 dishes for buckets.

It seems that a different member of the Heat is stepping up each game and leading them to victory. I guess that's just what they wanted when they signed LeBron and Bosh to complement Wade.

Number 3 out of Marquette via Chicago is now averaging 25.3 points per game for the Heat. That's good enough for second on his team, but fourth in the NBA, as he and LeBron are fourth and second respectively overall in the NBA in points per game.  Impressive.

Number 46 Set to Retire

The greatest professional athlete to wear the jersey number 46 is retiring as a player from Major League Baseball.  The conversation will quickly turn to Andy Pettitte's career pitching numbers and whether or not they are Hall of Fame worthy.  Let's take a look at a few of the key stats and how they fit into the equation.

  • 240 career wins (55th all-time)
  • .635 career winning percentage (43rd all-time)
  • 2,251 career strikeouts (48th all-time)
  • 3.88 career ERA
  • 5 World Series Championships
  • Career MLB leader in postseason wins (19)
Now those are some very competitive statistics.  Good enough for the Baseball Hall of Fame?  The writers will decide that answer beginning in five years time.

The postseason wins are impressive, however.  Yes, he played for the Yankees, but that doesn't mean he automatically wins games.  If there is one thing that puts the voters over the top, it might be the postseason win total.

Did you know......................that the next closest pitcher to Pettitte in postseason wins is John Smoltz with 15?

James scored an amazing 23 points in the first quarter alone.  First quarter.  Wow.  He wound up with a double-double, nabbing 11 boards.  I think they need to come up with some different names when a guy scores more than 50 points and goes into double digits in the rebounds or assists category.  Any ideas?

Next up for the league leader out of Washington D.C. and his Thunder teammates are the Phoenix Suns who have won their last three contests.

Troy Polamalu Jersey: Reebok Black Replica #43 Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey - X-LargeCongratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers' number 43, Troy Polamalu, who was voted as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year of 2010.  Polamalu established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Steelers secondary quite some time ago.  He impressed fans, teammates, opponents and obviously the Associated Press, with his presence and play in 2010.

With his wild mane of hair flowing out of his black and gold helmet, Polamalu was one of the keys to Pittsburgh's success in 2010, as he notched more than 60 tackles and 7 interceptions, despite missing two regular season games due to injury.

Troy has so impressed his current and former teammates that one current New York Jet called Polamalu the "greatest player" he's ever played with.

Polamalu comes up big when it counts, as he proved during a critical moment of the Steelers win over rival Baltimore in this year's playoff tilt.  With the game on the line in this Sunday's battle in Big D, watch for Polamalu to make his presence felt once more.
