You can just call him Kareem. People will know who you are talking about. No need to invoke his previous name: Lew Alcindor. Or his current last name: Abdul-Jabbar. Just say Kareem and people will know who you're talking about.
Unfortunately, you can't say the same thing about number 33. You can't just say number 33 and people will automatically think of Kareem. Because, you see, there was this guy who wore a green uniform up in Boston. He could shoot the ball like no one else before or after him. He could will his team to wins. Yes, Mr. Bird was one of the best ever. No doubt.
But here, when looking at the best ever to wear number 33, I have to go with Kareem. The numbers tell me that it has to be him.
