Retro Jerseys - Top 5 NFL

Keeping with the theme of my personal top 5 jerseys, here are my top 5 NFL retro, or throwback you may call them, football jerseys.

1 - Johnny Unitas Baltimore Colts White Jersey Number 19

This jersey could easily be called a shirt, instead of a football jersey.  Do you remember when football players wore long sleeve jerseys?  Would certainly impair the throws of some of today's All-Pro quarterbacks.  This jersey is a classic blue on white long sleever of quite possibly the greatest quarterback ever.

2 - Walter Payton Chicago Bears Blue Jersey Number 34

A super cool jersey, not only because it's a Bears classic, but also because it's the jersey of my personal pick for the best running back to ever play the game.  He might not have all the stats, but boy could he ever run.....and block.....and catch.  He could run around you, over you, or through you.  Check out this YouTube video of Walter Payton.  It actually gave me chills.  AWESOME!

3 - John Elway Denver Broncos Orange Jersey Number 7

Some might say that this color jersey is "gaudy".  I'd say it's just retro cool.  This jersey makes me recall the younger gun-slinging John Elway bringing the Broncos back against the Browns in the playoffs.  A cool jersey of one of the coolest quarterbacks of all-time.

4 - Bart Starr Green Bay Packers Green Jersey Number 15

Ever see pictures or film of the ice bowl? This is basically the jersey that Bart Starr wore in one of the coldest, and coolest, football games ever.

75 - Dan Marino Miami Dolphins Teal Jersey Number 13

Is this jersey teal?  I don't know, whatever color it is, it's cool, and so is Dan Marino.  Another contender for best quarterback of all-time.  The dude led is so many passing categories you can't even count them all.  Stud QB with a super cool jersey.

The Top 5 NFL Jerseys?

As I did with my recent post on my top 5 NHL jerseys, I thought I'd list my top 5 current NFL jerseys. Again, this is my personal opinion. I'd like to hear your thoughts on your top 5 NFL jerseys also. Please leave a comment, thanks.

1 - Pittsburgh Steelers Black Jersey

I am not a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.  Far from it.  But........I do think that their jerseys are very cool.  The classic black and gold harkens back to the days of the Steel Curtain with the likes of "Mean" Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, and Mel Blount to name a few.

2 - Tennesee Titans Dark Blue (Alternate) Jersey

For some reason, I really like the combination of the light blue shoulders on the dark blue front and back of the alternate jersey for the Tennessee Titans.  (Maybe it reminds me of my alma mater'sbasketball jersey). In any case, I like the color combo on this  jersey in addition to the cool symbol on the sleeve of the jersey.

3 - Washington Redskins White Jersey

Again, I'm not a big fan of the Washington Redskins, but I have to say I like their jerseys.  In particular, the white jerseys with the maroon (or is it garnet?) and gold on the sleeves.   Can't you just envision John Riggins plowing through a defense, or Art Monk smoking defenders while wearing this jersey?

4 - San Diego Chargers Light Blue (Alternate) Jersey

Can this jersey even be called an alternate any longer?  It seems like every time I see the Chargers playing, they are wearing this jersey.  Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it.  This jersey reminds me of seeing Dan Fouts throwing darts and bombs to his receivers, like Charlie Joiner or Kellen Winslow.  The bolts on the shoulders add to the cool retro look of this jersey.

5 - Oakland Raiders Black Jersey

This jersey reminds me of  Howie Long , Fred Biletnikoff and Marcus Allen.  A simple, but very cool jersey.

Jersey Number of the Day - 3 - Dwayne Wade - 12-29-10

"D" Wade's jersey number 3 is honored today for his performance in the Miami Heat's 125-119 win over the Houston Rockets.  Wade put up an impressive 45 points on 17 of 24 shooting from the field and was 10 for 10 from the stripe.  The next closest scorer on the Heat was Chris Bosh with 21 points on the night.  The Heat are really jelling now and look to be unstoppable.  So much for that slow start.  Look out Celtics.

Jersey Number of the Day - 87 - Sidney Crosby - 12-28-10

Reebok Pittsburgh Penguins 2011 Winter Classic Sidney Crosby Youth (8-20) Replica Jersey (L/XL)Sid "The Kid" scored 4 points (2 goals and 2 assists) in a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.  In the process, Crosby extended his streak of games in which he's scored at least one point to 25.  Crosby now has an amazing 65 points on the season, with 32 of those points being goals.  Wow.

NHL Jersey Number 84 - Guillaume Latendresse

Guillaume Latendresse Autographed Jersey - ReplicaGuillaume Latendresse, playing just over three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens all while wearing jersey number 84, is the best NHL athlete to wear that jersey number.

Latendresse, wearing the extraordinary jersey number 84, made his first appearance in the NHL at age 19 with Montreal, during the 2006-07 season, after being drafted in the 2nd round of the NHL entry draft in 2005.  He would find success immediately, scoring 29 points in his first regular season.  His production would remain steady over the next two seasons with 27 and 26 points respectively.

Since being traded to Minnesota, Latendresse has only improved offensively, albeit while wearing the inverse of his jersey number with the Canadiens.

Did you know...........that before Latendresse donned number 84, it was the last unworn jersey number in the NHL?

Another familiar face in a new place.  Big Bopper Adam Dunn will be sporting jersey number 32 for the Chicago White Sox in 2011.  The prolific home run hitter will be sure to see quite a few leave the park on the South Side of Chicago, along with his new teammate Paul Konerko.  This new Sox addition should make for a team that contends for most round-trippers in the league.  Read more here.
