MLB Number 59 - Todd Jones

Number 59 isn't the most popular baseball jersey number, but it was worn by one of the game's better relievers to ever take to a mound. Todd Jones, the journeyman closer, is the best MLB athlete to ever wear the jersey number 59.

Todd Jones was drafted in the first round of the amateur draft in 1989 by the Houston Astros. Jones would play his first four MLB seasons with the Astros, racking up his first 39 career saves. That was the beginning of a very productive career as an MLB reliever, where Jones would wind up with a career 319 saves. He would lead the league in saves with a whopping 42 in 2000 for the Detroit Tigers.

Jones could certainly make a batter whiff, collecting 868 strikeouts in 1072 innings pitched.

Over his 16 seasons in the major leagues, Jones would pitch for five different teams, including two stints with the Detroit Tigers.

Did you know.......Todd Jones is also a writer, with a regular column for The Sporting News?

MLB Number 58 - Jonathan Papelbon

Jonathan Papelbon, the Boston Red Sox closer, is the best MLB athlete to ever wear the jersey number 58. Why? Well, let's take a look at some of Papelbon's stats through his first five years with the Red Sox.

In his first five years in the league, Papelbon has racked up 151 saves. This takes into account the fact that Papelbon had a grand total of zero saves in his rookie season. Once it was settled that Papelbon would be a closer (he started three games in his rookie year), it was lights out from then on.

In 298 career innings pitched through his first five seasons, he has whiffed 346 batters. That's a ridiculous innings pitched to strikeout ratio.

His career ERA, through the '09 season is a minuscule 1.84. In Papelbon's first full season in the pen, he put up a sub-1 ERA of 0.92.

Did you know....................that Papelbon was first drafted by the Oakland A's in 2002, but did not sign with them?
