NFL Athlete Number 84 - Shannon Sharpe

Drafted by the Denver Broncos with pick number 192 out of Savannah State, Shannon Sharpe played in the NFL between the years of 1990 and 2003, eventually becoming the best NFL athlete to ever wear the jersey number 84.

Shannon played in all 16 regular season games his first three years in the NFL, however it wasn't until his fourth NFL season that he really hit his stride and put up some big numbers. Playing tight end for the Broncos, in 1993, he caught 81 passes for 995 yards and 9 TDs during the regular season. He had strong receiving numbers each season thereafter (with the exception of 1999 when he only played in 5 games.)

Over his career, Sharpe amassed some excellent receiving numbers, especially for a tight end.

  • 10,060 receiving yards

  • 815 receptions

  • 62 touchdowns

Did you know.....Sharpe was a member of three Super Bowl championship teams?

  1. What about Randy Moss? Although he did change his number from 84 to 18(oakland) and 81(new england), when he was #84 on the Minnesota Vikings he managed to pull in 90 touchdowns in only 7 years. In terms of touchdown count, Moss did what Sharpe did in less then half the time, and this does not include Moss' single season touchdown record of 22 when he was on New England a few years later.

The only argument for Sharpe is that he has three super bowl rings, while Moss has zero. Then again, Sharpe's surrounding cast on those super bowl teams included Terrell Davis, John Elway, and when he moved to Baltimore he had one of the best NFL defenses of all time.

In short, Moss deserves this spot. In only seven years on the vikings as #84, Moss had 9142 receiving yards, 574 receptions, and 90 touchdowns. With exception to receptions, Moss has the same amount of yards as Sharpe and about 30 more touchdowns, and this was only in 7 years when Sharpe played 16. If I compare Moss' full career stats, these two players are not comparable at all as Moss blows Sharpe out of the water.

  2. I'd also have to say Moss. Shannon's brother was no slouch either, just had an injury shortened career.
