Bill George is the best NFL athlete to ever wear jersey number 61, and the best professional athlete to ever wear the jersey number 61.
He is credited as the first star at the middle linebacker position in the NFL. He spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Bears, as the predecessor to Mike Singletary and Dick Butkus, and one year with the Rams at the end of his career.
He is a 1974 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, and was named number 49 on The Sporting News list of the 100 greatest NFL players in 1999.
