Jack Lambert is the best NFL athlete, and the best professional sports athlete, to ever wear the jersey number 58. His name is synonymous with tough football player. The prototypical linebacker, Lambert led the "Steel Curtain" defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.
Beginning with his rookie season in 1974, Lambert took over the starting middle linebacker position for the Steelers, and didn't give it up for 11 years. Over his NFL career, spanning the years 1974 to 1984, he was named an All-Pro and Pro-Bowler nine times each, and was a Super Bowl Champion four times in the 70s.
