Okay, this was a tough NFL jersey number to pick. There are some NFL athletes whose number has always been (or primarily been) number 46. However, there is also a Pro Football Hall of Famer who wore the jersey number 46 for six years of his stellar career. That Hall of Famer is Lou Groza, and he wore the number 46 between the years of 1946 and 1951.
Groza was a both an offensive lineman and placekicker during his NFL career. Between the years of 1946 and 1959 Groza was a center (rookie season),a tackle and a kicker. From 1961 to 1967 he kicked for the Cleveland Browns. Groza played his entire NFL career with the Cleveland Browns.
It has been speculated that the Browns changed their uniform numbers between the years of 1951 and 1952 seasons to conform with the NFL's numbering system for uniforms. Groza switched his number around this time frame from 46 to 76. You might be interested to know that Groza is also our pick for the best professional athlete to ever wear the uniform number 76.
