Although Donovan McNabb is a serious consideration here, and may eventually be considered the best to wear jersey number 5 in the NFL, Paul Hornung is the best athlete to have ever worn the NFL jersey number 5.
Paul Hornung, "The Golden Boy" of Notre Dame University fame, wore the jersey number 5 in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers between the years 1957 to 1962 and 1964-1966. Hornung, a superb athlete, excelled at more than one position in the NFL. Primarily a halfback, Hornung also played quarterback and kicker. In fact, as a placekicker, he made 12 field goals and 41 extra points in 1964.
Over nine NFL seasons, Hornung rushed for 3,711 yards and fifty touchdowns, threw for 383 yards and five touchdowns, and made 66 field goals and 190 extra points. He also caught 130 passes for 1,480 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Did you know.......Paul Hornung was twice the NFL Player of the Year? (1960 and 1961)
