There is only one NFL athlete, as listed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, to wear the number 2 as his primary uniform number, and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. That player is Charley Trippi.
Ironically, Trippi may be more known for wearing the number 62 as a standout college football player for the University of Georgia. He has been inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame, in addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He won the 1946 Maxwell Award for college football's Most Outstanding player, and was recently ranked number 20 out of ESPN's list of Top 25 College Football Players in History.
Taken first overall by the Chicago Cardinals in the 1945 NFL draft, Trippi went on to have an excellent NFL career. He was a two-time Pro Bowler, and played primarily as a halfback for the Cardinals, before switching to quarterback (what an athlete!) In 1954 and 1955, Charley even played defense, and he also played on special teams as a punter and punt returner!
Trippi was a key member of the Cardinals 1947 NFL Championship team, scoring two touchdowns (a 44-yard run, and a 75-yard punt return,) to lead his team past the Philadelphia Eagles.
Did you know......Charley Trippi played in five college all-star classics?
