NFL Athlete Number 1 - Warren Moon

Who was the best NFL athlete to ever wear the uniform number 1? This one is fairly easy. Warren Moon, the longtime NFL and CFL quarterback, who is now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the best NFL athlete to ever wear the jersey number 1.

Warren was best known for quarterbacking the Houston Oilers from the mid 1980s to the early 1990s. He also lined up under center for Minnesota, Seattle and Kansas City.

Some of Warren's credentials:

  • 291 regular season touchdown passes
  • Nine time Pro Bowl selection
  • 80.9 regular season passer rating (85.8 in playoffs)
  • 49,325 passing yards (regular season)
  • Hall of Famer

Warren Moon had his best regular season in 1990 when he threw 33 touchdowns with only 13 INTs for a 96.8 passer rating. He also threw for 4,689 yards to go along with a .620 completion percentage that year.

Did you know......Warren Moon was the Grey Cup (CFL equivalent of the Super Bowl) MVP in 1980 and 1982?

If I remember correctly, Donald Igwebuike of the Bucs wore #1. Obviously no competition for the best, but a 1 none the less.

missing from this list entirely is the number "00", of which only two players wore to my memory, Jim Otto long time center for the Raiders and Kenny Burroughs, wide receiver with the Oilers.

    Temporarily:
Randall Cunningham ( during his one year with the Ravens ).
Jeff George ( 3 years with the Falcons).
    Reggie Roby (punter).

Number 1 is tricky for two reasons. First, it is a number assigned predominantly to kickers, so of course players who wear this number will rack the points up. Second there are alot of college wide receivers who wear the number 1 and are then not able to take that number in the pros (Larry Fitzgerald).

Reggie Roby wore number 4. But Garo "I'm not Bob Griese" Yepremian wore number 1.
