The Villanova University alumnus and longtime Oakland and Los Angeles Raider, Howie Long, is the best professional athlete to ever wear the jersey number 75. Howie, who was drafted in the second round of the 1981 NFL draft, went on to an illustrious career as a defensive end with the Raiders, spanning the years 1981 to 1993.
Howie was selected to eight Pro Bowls, four All-AFC teams and was named an All-Pro in 1983, 1984 and 1985. According to profootballhof.com, Howie had a career mark of 84 sacks which does not include 7.5 sacks made in 1981 because it was not an official statistic at that time.
Long was named the 1985 co-NFL defensive player of the year. He is also a member of the NFL's 1980s all-decade team. As a young member of the Raiders, Howie helped the team capture the Super Bowl title during the 1983 season with a 38-9 victory of the Washington Redskins.
Did you know.....Howie had five sacks in one game in 1983?

#75, defensive lineman of the The Pittsburgh Steelers: Mean Joe Greene. He was Chuck Noll's first draft choice and later became the cornerstone of The Steel Curtain. Further, Mean Joe had football's best commercial, and Howie Long is just plain annoying on his pregame shows.
ReplyDeleteAmen Brother I would alot rather have Howie coming at me than Mean Joe
ReplyDeleteWhaaaat ! This ought to be Joe Greene hands down !
ReplyDeleteIf you surveyed 100 sports fans, I guarantee you 99 of them would say number 75 equals Mean Joe Greene! I know there is already a lot of Steelers on this list, but this one's a no brainer!

ReplyDeleteDeacon Jones coined the 'sack' before it was ever counted.ESPN just rated him No.1 overall passrusher all time,no mention of Howie.Yep i like joe green too.
ReplyDeleteI love my Raiders, but Deacon Jones should get it.
ReplyDeleteHowie is still better than Mean Joe, and that ain't homeritis talking.
I would take Mean Joe Greene, Deacon Jones and Howie Long as my defensive front in the 3-4 any day.
ReplyDeleteForrest Gregg was called by Vince Lombardi the finest player he EVER coached.
