Number 16 - Joe Montana

"Joe Cool" is the best athlete to wear number 16. How did Joe get that nickname? Here's an example of his demeanor that shows why: It's the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXIII, with 3:10 left on the clock, the 49ers at their own eight yard line and down 16-13 to the Bengals. Harris Barton, a lineman for the 49ers at the time, explains, "Right before that series, we're standing on the sidelines, and he says, `Look up there.' He's pointing up in the stands. He says, `That's John Candy.' '' They went on to score and win the Super Bowl. Here are some of Joe's credentials:

  • Four-time Super Bowl winner (starting QB)
  • Three-time Super Bowl MVP
  • Eight-time Pro Bowl selection
  • NFL Hall of Fame class of 2000
  • Second all-time in passing efficiency (92.3)

Some consider Joe to be the best quarterback to ever play the game. Did you know....that Joe produces wine under the label Montagia? (photo courtesy of espn.com)

No doubt about it, Montana was the best to ever wear the number 16. With a distant second place vote - Whitey Ford would be my choice.

  2. A vote for second with Whitey Ford. Agreed. "The Chairman of the Board," was a great pitcher and a consideration here at number 16.

  3. My vote goes to Joe Montana as the best QB in the history of the NFL regardless of number, sorry if my comment is a little off topic.

Until someone wins 5 Superbowls , Joe Cool will remain the best QB of all time .

If superbowl championships are the standard for how good someone is, (even though it takes a WHOLE team, offense AND DEFENSE)then Terry Bradshaw is also the best quarterback to ever play the game, right?! Don't be ridiculous! Jim Kelly and Buffalo went to 4 STRAIGHT superbowls and lost! But he made it 4 times...IN A ROW!

Was it Joe or the system employed by Bill Walsh? Remember the 49ers were a strong team and won a Super Bowl under Steve Young even after Joe went to KC. How about a shout out for Bobby Clarke of the Philadelphia Flyers for the best athlete to wear Number 16? Clarke lead the Flyers to 2 Stanley Cups, probably should have won 2 more if not for the biased officiating against the Broad Street Bullies. The Flyers were the first expansion team in the NHL to win the Cup. Also, who can forget that Clarke's Flyers were the only NHL team to beat the touring Soviet Red Army team in 1976.

No lack of love for the NFL...but how about NHL, Red Wings, #16 Vladimir Konstantinov???? Just got to believe...

  11. 16 is for Joe Montana alone.
But if there were a second place from this group-
Chipper Jones,Brett Hull,Bob Hull,Bobby Clarke Bob Lanier, Bo Jackson & Len Dawson-I'd go with Brett Hull.

Can anyone tell the history behind Joe wearing 16...did he wear it at Notre Dame or even before?

Joe wore #3 at Notre Dame, and I think wore #19 in HS.

Obvious choice for #16. Hands down.
