Athough Thurman Munson gets strong consideration here, and could be the sentimental favorite, Bart Starr is the best athlete to wear number 15, based largely on his statistics, awards and championships. This Alabama boy was drafted number 200 in the 1956 NFL draft. He went on to quarterback the Green Bay Packers to five NFL championships. Bart was the 1966 NFL MVP and led the Packers to victory in the first two Superbowls (1967 and 1968.) Did you know.....Bart Starr's real first name is Bryan? (photo courtesy of bartstarr.com)

Bart Starr was a great NFL quarterback.... but does he define his sport?
ReplyDeleteKarch Kiraly = Volleyball
The winningest player in volleyball history. Only player to win Olympic medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.
Won Olympic Gold in Indoor Volleyball in 1984 and 1988, and Olympic Gold in Beach Volleyball in 1996.
Has won more tournaments (148) and more money ($3,159,773 ) than any other player on the AVP Pro Beach Tour.
At age 45, Kiraly is the oldest player to ever compete at the highest level - still winning AVP tournaments, while beating competitors half his age. He has won at least one tournament in 24 of the 27 seasons he has played - spanning four decades
(1978-present). Oldest player to win a Pro Beach tournament (at 41, 42, 43, and 44-years-young).
On top of that.... 3 NCAA championships and one runner-up in his four years at UCLA.
Also, he's 6'2" hitting over and around guys who are 6'8" to 6'10".
Known as the best volleyball player on the planet. Hands down!
Thurman Munson, a generation of little league catchers wore the number just because of Thurman.
ReplyDeleteBart Starr was a very goo QB on a great team but Munson defined his team.
Bart Starr was more than a fine NFL QB. He was the best leader on a TEAM that defined its sport.
ReplyDeleteI have Bart Starr beating out Dick Allen, Bobby Smith and Vince Carter. Thurman Munson maybe a sentimental favorite in New York, but Dick Allen takes 2nd in this group.
ReplyDeleteBig ups to the first comment for knowing Karch Kiraly. I'd give him the nod simply for being the best of his sport. Starr was great though

ReplyDeleteResponding to Anonymous re: Karch Kiraly - you make great points. but Starr is the Karch Kiraly of football. Winningest championship quarterback in NFL history - 5. For those who argue that he rode Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor's back, his passing was the key element in 7 of the 9 postseason victories. He had years when he would have three times as many 40+ yard TD passes as total interceptions. Offensively, his passes won the 1966 NFL title game, Super Bowl I and the 1967 NFL title game "BY HIMSELF" (of course, with pass catchers to help).
