Number 11 - Mark Messier

The best athlete to wear the number 11 is Mark Messier, "the Captain." Messier guaranteed the New York Rangers would win game six against the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup playoff semi-finals of 1994, and they did. Messier then laced up his hockey skates and led the New York Rangers to a Stanley Cup championship, their first in 54 years. Here are some of Messier's credentials:

  • Six-time Stanley Cup champion
  • 15-time NHL All-Star
  • Two-time Hart Trophy award winner
  • Only player to captain two Stanley Cup champion teams ('89-'90 Oilers and '93-'94 Rangers)

Did you know.....Mark Messier played for the Mets. The Spruce Grove Mets of the AJHL that is. (photo courtesy of espn.com)

  1. Phil Simms? Mark Messier? I understand he screwed your team up and your pi$$ed you NY hacks, but the baby faced assasin is pound for pound the best player in NBA history.

Keep this in mind, the Bad Boys led by Isiah were the only team in the NBA to beat Magic, Larry, and Jordan in the playoffs. Not to mention he won an NCAA title. Best number 11 ever!

Lefty Grove would be the greatest # 11. Hockey doesn't register with me. Elvin Hayes and Isiah Thomas and Bob McAdoo. Phill Simms and Drew Bledsoe had good runs.

Messier has the second most points of anyone ever to play in the NHL. He is the only player to captain 2 teams to a Stanley Cup championship. He is this number.
Isiah Thomas is runner-up. Phil Simms a close 3rd.
I can't believe Drew Bledsoe was even mentioned. Why don't we just throw Yao Ming into the conversation?

  7. Don't forget about HOF pitcher Carl Hubbell. His name belongs in the discussion.

  8. Bledsoe, Aparicio, Elvin Hayes and Yao Ming if I don't go with the NHL. Messier is a legit choice.

if it wasn't for Messier, Gretzky wouldn't have such a pretty face.

  11. Slam dunk on this one. Messier: sixth in career goals, third in career assists, second in career points, more Stanley Cup rings than can fit on one hand. No other 11 even comes close!
