The best athlete to wear number 10 is "the flower," Guy LaFleur. The flower was a 17-year veteran of the NHL, playing for the Canadiens (most of his career,) the Rangers and the Quebec Nordiques. Here are some of his key stats:
- Led NHL in scoring (Art Ross trophy) for three seasons, 1976-1978
- First in NHL to reach six consecutive seasons with more than 50 goals and 100 points
- NHL MVP (Hart Trophy) for two years, 1977-1978
- Stanley Cup playoff MVP (Conn Smythe Trophy,) 1977
- NHL Hall of Famer
Did you know.....Guy was ranked by the Hockey News in 1997 as the 11th greatest NHL player of all-time? (photo courtesy of allposters.com)

Will be showing my age with this comment, but I remember watching many games he played! Assuming 99 will be Gretzgy?
ReplyDeleteUnless we're only counting North American 4-sport players, I think No. 10 is taken by Pele.
ReplyDeletepele kicks the flower's butt
ReplyDeletePele is easiest the best to wear number 10. He is the best in his sport. Is Guy LaFleur better than Wayne Gretzky...I don't think soo!
ReplyDeleteI agree...Pele by a mile. There is not one athlete other than NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB on this list. That's nuts!
ReplyDeletePele, yes - or Maradona. Or possibly, at present, Jonny Wilkinson - the best fly-half in the world. But this is a website clearly talking only about American sports, so it shouldn't really be 'best athletes' so much as 'best US athletes.'
ReplyDeletePele would be good is soccer was a sport. Walt 'Cylde' Frazier gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand soccer (aka lady football), but Pele is a bad a$$, Pele hands down
ReplyDeletePele by a mile, but this site only considers US athletes to be of significance. Only to be expected when the US calls its domestic sports competitions the "World Championship". How can that be, when the rest of the world is excluded?
ReplyDeleteFran Tarkenton is the best #10 ever. 342 touchdown passes, 47,003 passing yards 9 time pro bowler, 6 time all pro, 3674 rushing yards and 32 rushing touchdowns. 1975 mvp. best 10 ever
ReplyDeleteGuy Lafleur est sans aucun doute le meilleur joueur professionnel à avoir porter le no. 10. Flowers is the best...
ReplyDeleteI grew up wearing the great Sir Francis #10 and scrambling in my purple against imaginary defenses. It is Tarken10 for me, but the arguments are for Lafleur are great. Modano may be a good choice and New Yorkers have their Walt Frazier, but they all beat MLB's Andre Dawson.
ReplyDeleteTim Hardaway was making people look silly with that crossover for years sportin that #10
ReplyDeletePele
ReplyDeleteHeard them talk about this list on the Ticket 1310 and I am shocked Pele is not the best #10 I would like to hear the reasoning behind the decision to pick Peter Lefluer (Dodgeball) over the great Pele.
ReplyDeleteSmonkey out...
PELE
